Is your vessel fit for purpose?

  Published April 4th, 2016

Have you ever been tempted to bolt on after-market equipment? Sometimes drilling into your vessel can compromise the watertight integrity of your boat – with deadly consequences...

We have seen cases where people have drilled into their hull which has caused water ingress, flooding, and saturated foam buoyancy.

Water leakage includes the capillary effect, the ability of water to pass through miniscule spaces between two objects - like a screw and deck. Very small cracks and openings can transfer very large amounts of water because the capillary effect functions like a natural pump. This results in more than just leaks. The capillary effect has the ability to generate a flow of water far greater than gravity alone. So, where it may look as if a screw, by means of the screw pressure generated, should seal itself, it actually can result in an accelerated leak.

To avoid the capillary effect, avoid DIY modifications to your boat and seek advice from a professional.

Other times, adding fixtures to your boat may affect stability. Placing of fixtures on your vessel can change the boat’s balance by taking it off centre as well as decreasing the load capacity. Buoyancy is a precise science, if you are going to make modifications yourself, it’s important that you understand the formulas in the Standard. However, we recommend seeking professional advice from a reputable shipwright.
